Assistive Technology Engineer
Position Overview: The Assistive Technology Engineer will support the deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of assistive technology (AT) hardware and software for the Social Security Administration (SSA). This role involves direct interaction with employees with disabilities, ensuring they have the necessary tools and support to enhance their work productivity. The Engineer will work collaboratively with project managers and external vendors to ensure compliance with technical standards and federal regulations.
Key Responsibilities:

Installation and Configuration:

Install, configure, and test AT hardware and software on SSA-provided laptops and other devices.

Ensure that all installed technologies meet SSA’s security and technical standards.

Relocate and deinstall AT equipment as required, ensuring proper handling and documentation.

Technical Support and Troubleshooting:

Provide on-site and remote technical support for assistive technologies, addressing user inquiries and problems.

Troubleshoot hardware and software issues, working with vendors when necessary to resolve complex problems.

Document technical issues and resolutions for future reference and compliance tracking.

Training and Documentation:

Conduct training sessions for SSA employees on the use of assistive technologies, ensuring they understand how to maximize their use.

Create and maintain technical documentation, user guides, and training materials to support employees with disabilities.

Collaboration and Compliance:
-
Work closely with project managers to ensure timely delivery and installation of AT resources.

Collaborate with software publishers to ensure compatibility of AT software with SSA's network and legacy systems.

Assist in maintaining compliance with Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Inventory Management:

Track and manage inventory of AT devices, ensuring accurate records of equipment status, usage, and maintenance.

Prepare reports on usage and performance of assistive technology devices as required.
Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent experience.

5 or more years of hands-on experience with assistive technology hardware and software, including computer installation and troubleshooting.

Familiarity with federal regulations regarding accessibility and assistive technology.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
Preferred Skills:

Experience working in a customer service role, particularly in a technical support capacity.

Knowledge of SSA’s technical requirements and assistive technology products.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to providing exceptional service.
