504 Assistive Technology (AT) Expert

The 504 Assistive Technology Expert will support the Social Security Administration (SSA) in meeting Section 504 and 508 accessibility compliance through the implementation, management, and support of assistive technologies for employees with disabilities (EWD). This role includes hardware/software deployment, training, troubleshooting, and lifecycle support for a wide range of AT tools such as screen readers, speech-to-text software, and alternative input devices across SSA offices and remote environments.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Assistive Technology Support & Configuration:
  • Evaluate, install, configure, and support AT hardware and software such as screen readers, speech-to-text programs, and alternative keyboards/mice.
  • Customize assistive tools to accommodate individual user needs and ensure compatibility with SSA legacy systems and network configurations.
  • Maintain current inventory of supported technologies and document installation procedures and use guides.
  1. Technical Integration & Troubleshooting:
  • Provide Level 2/3 support to resolve technical issues with AT tools within SSA’s secured IT environment.
  • Collaborate with IT and accessibility teams to integrate AT solutions with base image systems and SSA-issued laptops.
  • Test, validate, and troubleshoot software updates and hardware configurations prior to deployment.
  1. Compliance & Documentation:
  • Ensure all AT deployments adhere to Section 504 and Section 508 regulations, as well as SSA’s information security and accessibility standards.
  • Document technical support activity, system configurations, and user customizations.
  • Contribute to the development of accessible training materials and support documents in formats like MS Word, Braille-ready files, or plain text.
  1. Training & User Engagement:
  • Provide remote and on-site AT training and onboarding support for EWD.
  • Develop user-specific training plans and deliver accessible tutorials and resources.
  • Assist with planning, evaluation, and feedback collection on deployed technologies and user satisfaction.
  1. Hardware/Software Lifecycle Management:
  • Coordinate with SSA stakeholders on new technology procurement, warranty support, and deinstallation/relocation logistics.
  • Track repairs, replacements, and hardware refresh cycles in alignment with federal acquisition timelines and CAP funding offsets.

 

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in assistive technology implementation within a federal or large enterprise environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of common AT tools (e.g., JAWS, Dragon, ZoomText, Fusion, NVDA, Kurzweil).
  • Understanding of Section 504/508 accessibility regulations and their application in IT environments.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows 10/11, software installation procedures, and remote support tools.
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills; able to develop and deliver user-friendly documentation and training.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience supporting SSA, DHS, VA, or similar federal agencies.
  • Certification in Assistive Technology (e.g., RESNA ATP).
  • Experience working with the Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP).

 

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED:

Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance. U.S. Citizenship is required for a Public Trust clearance at this location.
