DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT (SME)

 

The Digital Accessibility Subject Matter Expert (SME) will provide senior-level technical and strategic expertise supporting an enterprise digital accessibility and ADA compliance initiative.

The SME will provide guidance across websites, applications, digital documents, PDFs, forms, multimedia, mobile applications, third-party platforms, accessibility governance, procurement, remediation, training, and monitoring. This individual will serve as a senior accessibility advisor to project leadership, technical teams, content owners, vendors, and client stakeholders.

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

1. Digital Accessibility Advisory and Compliance:

  • Serve as a senior SME on ADA Title II, WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and digital accessibility best practices.
  • Provide accessibility guidance across websites, applications, documents, PDFs, forms, multimedia, mobile applications, and third-party platforms.
  • Conduct and/or oversee accessibility assessments and validation activities.
  • Identify accessibility risks and recommend appropriate remediation and prioritization strategies.
  • Provide guidance regarding complex or high-priority accessibility issues.

 

2. Accessibility Governance and Remediation:

  • Advise on accessibility policies, governance frameworks, operational standards, and sustainable accessibility practices.
  • Support development of accessibility remediation strategies.
  • Provide guidance on accessible document creation, remediation, and validation.
  • Advise on accessibility requirements for procurement and third-party products.
  • Review VPATs and ACRs and provide recommendations regarding product accessibility.
  • Support development of accessibility monitoring, reporting, and validation practices.

 

3. Training and Stakeholder Support:

  • Develop accessibility best practices, guidance, and reference materials.
  • Develop and deliver accessibility training for technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Provide consultation to project teams, leadership, content owners, developers, and vendors.
  • Facilitate accessibility discussions and help stakeholders understand technical and regulatory requirements.
  • Support organizational knowledge transfer and development of sustainable internal accessibility capabilities.
  • Provide ongoing advisory support as accessibility priorities and requirements evolve.

 

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

  • Extensive professional experience in digital accessibility, ADA compliance, accessibility consulting, or a related discipline.
  • Advanced knowledge of ADA Title II and WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting accessibility assessments and developing remediation strategies.
  • Broad experience with accessibility across websites, applications, digital documents, forms, multimedia, and/or third-party platforms.
  • Experience developing or advising on accessibility policies, governance, standards, or operational processes.
  • Experience providing accessibility consultation and guidance to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Experience with accessibility testing methodologies and tools.
  • Experience developing and/or delivering accessibility training.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, facilitation, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex accessibility requirements to executive, operational, and technical audiences.

 

Preferred skills include:

  • Experience supporting enterprise-wide digital accessibility programs.
  • Experience supporting municipal/local government or other public-sector organizations.
  • Experience with ADA Title II compliance initiatives.
  • Experience developing accessibility governance frameworks, strategic roadmaps, transition plans, or organizational policies.
  • Experience with accessible PDF and digital document remediation.
  • Experience reviewing VPATs and ACRs and advising procurement teams.
  • Experience with accessibility monitoring platforms, dashboards, and reporting.
  • Relevant professional accessibility certification, such as IAAP CPACC, WAS, CPWA, or DHS Trusted Tester.
